ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro (2026)

TL;DR: All three cost about $20 a month in the US: ChatGPT Plus $20, Claude Pro $20 ($17 a month billed annually) and Google AI Pro $19.99 ($199.99 a year, £18.99 a month in the UK). Pick ChatGPT Plus if you want the broadest all-round assistant with Codex for coding. Pick Claude Pro if you write long documents or want Claude Code, and can live with tighter five-hour limits. Pick Google AI Pro if you live in Gmail and Docs or need cloud storage: it includes 5 TB, which on its own is worth much of the price, and since October 13, 2026 it also includes Google’s new Gemini 4 Argon model.

Last updated: October 15, 2026. Prices and features checked on OpenAI’s, Anthropic’s and Google’s own pages.

The $20 AI subscription is the default purchase for anyone who’s outgrown a free chatbot. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all sell one, at nearly the same price, and each bundles a different set of extras. The usage rules also differ enough that the “best” plan depends far more on how you work than on which model tops this month’s leaderboard.

We haven’t run our own head-to-head tests, so this ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro comparison (with Google AI Pro, which many people still call Gemini Pro or Gemini Advanced) is built from each company’s published pricing and help pages, linked throughout. Where a vendor doesn’t publish a number, we say so.

ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro at a glance

The prices are nearly identical, so the decision comes down to bundles and limits. ChatGPT Plus is the broadest general assistant, Claude Pro is the most focused on writing and coding work, and Google AI Pro is the best value if you’d pay for Google storage anyway.

Which $20 AI plan has the highest usage limits?

None of the three publishes a simple message count, so there’s no clean winner. All three now meter usage by compute rather than by messages, and all three reset on a five-hour cycle with a weekly ceiling. What you can compare is how each one describes its allowance.

  • Claude Pro: Anthropic says Pro gives “at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free,” with weekly limits on top. Chat, Cowork and Claude Code share one pool (pricing FAQ).
  • Google AI Pro: Google’s Gemini limits page says limits are “compute-based” and refresh “every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit.” Pro gets 4x the usage of non-subscribers.
  • ChatGPT Plus: OpenAI publishes ranges for Codex and Work only. Its pricing doc estimates 15 to 160 local GPT-6.1 Sol messages, or 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages, per five-hour period on Plus, adding that “weekly limits may also apply.”

The structural difference to watch is that Claude Code and Claude chat draw from one pool, so heavy coding eats into your chat time. If you expect to hit limits often, the next tier up costs about the same everywhere: Claude Max 5x is $100 a month, ChatGPT Pro 100 is $100 and Google AI Ultra 5x is $99.99. Since October 7, 2026, Claude Max 5x also includes $100 a month in API credits for building on the Claude Platform (not usable for Claude Code). If you’re choosing models for API work rather than a chat plan, see our Sonnet 5.5 vs GPT-6.1 Sol comparison.

ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro for coding

Both include a full coding agent, so the choice is about workflow, not access. ChatGPT Plus includes Codex on the web, in the CLI, in IDE extensions and on iOS, with GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Claude Pro includes Claude Code in the terminal and desktop app. Google AI Pro offers expanded limits in Jules and Antigravity, and since October 13, 2026 includes Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search (inside Antigravity, Argon is limited to AI Ultra), per Google’s Argon announcement. Our Gemini 4 Argon guide covers who gets it and what it costs.

The practical differences:

  • Model access: on Plus, OpenAI lists GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna for Codex, with GPT-6 Astra usage estimated in the pricing table. On Claude Pro, Opus and Sonnet are included, but Anthropic’s newest Fable models run only on pay-as-you-go usage credits.
  • Shared limits: Claude Code shares Claude Pro’s pool with chat. On ChatGPT, Codex and ChatGPT Work share usage with each other, according to OpenAI’s pricing doc.
  • Extending usage: all three let you go beyond the plan. ChatGPT uses credits, Claude uses usage credits at API rates, and Google’s step up is AI Ultra.

If you already use VS Code or the terminal all day, try both coding agents on a free or one-month basis. Model rankings change monthly; your editor habits don’t.

Which is best for writing and research?

Claude Pro is the usual pick for long-form writing, and Google AI Pro is strongest if your documents already live in Google Docs. Claude Pro includes Research, Projects and Claude’s document and slide tools. ChatGPT Plus includes deep research and image generation. Google AI Pro puts Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets and adds Deep Research and Gemini Notebook.

What tips the balance is where your work lives:

  1. Your files are in Google Drive and your email is Gmail: Google AI Pro. Gemini works directly inside those apps.
  2. You write long reports, proposals or fiction: Claude Pro. Anthropic’s newest models support up to a 1M-token context window on paid plans, per its usage limits article.
  3. You want one tool for writing, images, voice and quick research: ChatGPT Plus.

Is Google AI Pro worth it for the 5 TB of storage alone?

For many people, yes. Google AI Pro includes 5 TB of storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, plus family sharing with up to five others. Google increased Pro’s storage to 5 TB in April 2026 without raising the price, 9to5Google reported.

If you already pay Google for 2 TB, the AI features become close to a free add-on. Google’s own plans page also lists YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium Standard as included in AI Pro, though availability varies by country. Neither ChatGPT Plus nor Claude Pro includes any storage.

The catch: Google AI plans are for personal Google Accounts only. If you use Google Workspace for work, Google points you to a Gemini add-on instead.

Which is best for students?

Google AI Pro, if you’re eligible for its student offer. Google says students can try Google AI Pro free for one year, including 5 TB of storage, though availability varies by country. Check Google’s AI plans page for eligibility before paying for anything.

Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic advertised a comparable student discount on the pages we checked. Anthropic’s help center says it has no standing discounts and runs only occasional promotions.

Can you get any of them cheaper with annual billing?

Claude Pro and Google AI Pro both offer annual plans that save money. Claude Pro is $200 a year, which works out to about $17 a month. Google AI Pro is $199.99 a year, about $16.67 a month. OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month and we didn’t find an annual web price.

One more tip: buy on the web. App-store prices can differ from web prices, and refunds for App Store purchases go through Apple rather than the AI company.

Verdict: which should you pick?

There’s no universal winner, but there’s usually an obvious one for you.

  • Pick ChatGPT Plus if you want one assistant that does a bit of everything well: chat, images, voice, deep research and Codex. It’s the safest default.
  • Pick Claude Pro if your work is mostly writing or coding and you value Claude’s tone and long context. Expect to watch your limits if you use Claude Code heavily.
  • Pick Google AI Pro if you use Gmail, Docs and Drive, need storage, or want to share AI and storage with family. On value per dollar it’s hard to beat.

FAQ

Which $20 AI plan is best for coding?

All three include a coding agent: Codex with ChatGPT Plus, Claude Code with Claude Pro, and Jules and Antigravity with Google AI Pro. Choose the one that fits your editor and workflow, and remember Claude Code shares Claude Pro’s usage pool with chat.

Which plan has the highest usage limits?

None publishes a fixed message count. All three use compute-based limits with five-hour resets and weekly caps, so heavy users on any plan may need to upgrade or buy extra usage.

Is Google AI Pro worth it for the storage alone?

Often, yes. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and includes 5 TB of storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos, shareable with up to five family members.

ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro for writing?

Claude Pro is the common choice for long-form writing and long documents. ChatGPT Plus is better if you also want image generation, voice and a wider set of everyday tools.

Is Gemini Pro the same as Google AI Pro?

Close enough. People still search for “Gemini Pro” or “Gemini Advanced”, but Google’s paid plans are now called Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra. Google AI Pro is the $19.99 tier, with Gemini 4 Argon (since October 13, 2026) and expanded access to Gemini 3.1 Pro.

Can I get any of them cheaper annually?

Claude Pro is $200 a year (about $17 a month) and Google AI Pro is $199.99 a year. OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month.
