TL;DR: The biggest AI news this week was Google opening Gemini 4 Argon to the paid Gemini API and to Gemini app Pro and Ultra subscribers on October 13, at an introductory $2 / $10 per million tokens through November 30, 2026 (then $4 / $20). Meta launched Muse Wonder on the Meta Model API at $4 / $20 on October 12, while keeping Muse Wonder Full behind Muse Code Power ($50/mo) and Maximum ($200/mo) plans. Anthropic published midterm election safeguards (October 14) and distillation defenses that it says cut harvested reasoning data by about 90–99% (October 12). OpenAI is rolling out GPT-Live-1.1 in ChatGPT Voice and, on October 14, told API customers that GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini shut down on January 14, 2027. Reflection’s Beam weights are still not public.
Last updated: October 16, 2026. Covers announcements from Monday, October 12 through Friday, October 16 (US time), with the week labeled through Sunday, October 18. Checked against each company’s own blog, docs, changelog or pricing page. Prices are in USD; API tokens are billed in dollars in the UK too.
This is our weekly AI news roundup for people who build things: developers, indie hackers, and anyone paying an API bill. We skip the hype and focus on what changed, what it costs and what you can actually use today.
Last week’s theme was cheap small models. This week was frontier access and defenses: Argon finally has a public API price, Meta put a near-frontier coder on a commercial API, and Anthropic spent the week hardening Claude against distillation and election misuse.

How much does Gemini 4 Argon cost on the API?
Gemini 4 Argon (gemini-4-argon) costs $2.00 per million input tokens and $10.00 per million output tokens through November 30, 2026, then $4.00 / $20.00 from December 1. Implicit cached input is $0.10 per million through November 30, then $0.20. Google’s pricing page and What’s new in Gemini 4 Argon both say Argon is not available on the Free tier or on the Google AI Pro plan for API use.
Google’s October 13 blog post says Argon is globally available for developers on the paid Gemini API in AI Studio, for Google AI Ultra subscribers in Google Antigravity, and for Ultra and Pro subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search. The model uses a unified 1M-token input/output window, with long decode past the old 64K output cap.

What did Meta launch with Muse Wonder?
On October 12, 2026, Meta launched Muse Wonder on Muse Code and the Meta Model API at $4 input / $20 output per million tokens, with cached input at $0.20. The model ID is muse-wonder-1.0. Muse Wonder Full, which Meta calls its most advanced coding and long-running agent model, is not on the public API—only on Muse Code’s Power Usage ($50/month) and Maximum Usage ($200/month) plans, according to VentureBeat’s report of Meta’s pricing. Maximum Usage is described on Meta’s developer blog as 80x the Everyday Usage limit.
| Offering | Access | List price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
Muse Wonder (muse-wonder-1.0) |
Meta Model API + Muse Code | $4 / $20 per 1M tokens; cache $0.20 |
| Muse Wonder Full | Muse Code Power and Maximum only | Power $50/mo; Maximum $200/mo (VentureBeat) |
| Context window | Both Wonder models | ~1M tokens (Meta) |
Primary: Meta developer blog, Put your ideas to work with Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full (October 12, 2026). Power/Maximum dollar prices: VentureBeat, October 12, 2026.
Meta positions both models for multi-step coding agents, tool use and “active memory.” Neither Wonder model is open-weight. Artificial Analysis scores cited by VentureBeat put Wonder Full at 56 on its Intelligence Index (tied with Claude Sonnet 5.5 in that write-up) and standard Wonder at 52—treat those as third-party aggregates, not a reason to skip your own evals.
What did Anthropic change for elections and distillation?
Anthropic published two major posts builders should read even if they never touch politics: distillation defenses on October 12, and US midterms election safeguards on October 14.
On distillation, Anthropic says new methods—preserved thinking for newer API accounts, a two-stage classifier on frontier models, and faster bans plus charging for blocked distillation requests—have cut reasoning tokens distillers can extract on Anthropic’s own platform by about 10× to 100×, and early evidence suggests harvested data is down roughly 90–99%. Trade-offs for legitimate users include integration changes for preserved thinking, a stated false-positive rate under 0.1%, and resumed charging for some blocked requests since September 24. Full detail: Strengthening our defenses against distillation attacks.
On elections, Anthropic’s Preparing for the 2026 US midterms post (October 14) covers political-bias testing (Opus/Sonnet/Haiku 5.5 scoring 99% on Anthropic’s evenhandedness eval), TurboVote / Democracy Works voting-info links, new classifiers for multi-step misuse and fake news sites, and account bans for confirmed abuse. A related Usage Policy update clarifies election rules for campaigns.
Separately for agent builders, Anthropic’s Managed Agents docs for multiagent_20261001 confirm dynamic workflows can start up to 1,000 agents over a run’s life, with about 64 threads working at once in one run (API does not guarantee that concurrency number). That limit is in Anthropic’s workflow runs documentation, not a rumor.
If you run tools that can take actions, pair these launches with our AI agent security checklist. On Claude plan math, see Claude Max 5x vs 20x and Sonnet vs GPT-6.1 Sol.
What changed in ChatGPT and the OpenAI API?
OpenAI is rolling out GPT-Live-1.1 (and GPT-Live-1.1 Quip) in ChatGPT Voice with new accents and voices, and on October 14 it formally deprecated several GPT-4-series API snapshots for a January 14, 2027 shutdown.
Per ChatGPT release notes (checked October 16, 2026), Live-1.1 adds more natural accents and new voices including French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mexican Spanish and Bubbie. GPT-Live-1.1 is described as the default for Plus and higher; Quip is the mini variant for other users. Voice settings remain under Settings → Voice.
On the API side, OpenAI’s deprecations page says developers were notified on October 14, 2026 that these models leave the API on January 14, 2027, with gpt-6-luna as the recommended replacement:
| Shutdown date | Models | Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| January 14, 2027 | gpt-4o-2024-08-06, gpt-4o-2024-11-20 |
gpt-6-luna |
| January 14, 2027 | gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18 |
gpt-6-luna |
| January 14, 2027 | gpt-4.1-2025-04-14, gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14 |
gpt-6-luna |
Fine-tuned versions follow the same dates. Separately, several older snapshots (including an early gpt-4o-2024-05-13 and various GPT-4 / o-series IDs) still show an October 23, 2026 shutdown from the April 22, 2026 deprecation batch—worth a quick audit if any production traffic still pins those IDs.
Are Reflection Beam weights out yet?
No. As of October 16, 2026, Reflection AI has not published downloadable Beam weights. Reflection’s October 5 announcement still promised weights, a technical report and model card “later this month” under Apache 2.0. Our Reflection AI Beam tracker remains the place we will update when a Hugging Face repo or official mirror appears. Until then, treat Beam as waitlist / early-access API only, and do not size GPUs from unofficial arithmetic alone.
What should builders try this weekend?
If you have Gemini API billing enabled, run one hard coding or long-context task on gemini-4-argon before the introductory price ends on November 30. If you already use OpenAI-compatible clients, point a staging key at Meta’s Model API with muse-wonder-1.0 and compare quality against your current coder. If you still call GPT-4o snapshots, start the January migration now.
- Price-check Argon on a real workload. Compare
gemini-4-argonto your current flagship on the same prompts; remember Free and Google AI Pro do not include Argon on the API. - Smoke-test Muse Wonder. Swap
base_urlon an OpenAI-compatible client to Meta Model API and setmuse-wonder-1.0($4/$20). - Inventory OpenAI model IDs. Flag anything on the January 14, 2027 or October 23, 2026 shutdown lists.
- Re-read Anthropic’s distillation note if your app edits prior thinking blocks or replays reasoning across accounts—preserved thinking may break those patterns.
- Skip Beam hardware shopping until Reflection publishes the model card.
Our verdict
This was an access-and-defense week, not another price-floor week. Argon and Muse Wonder both give builders new frontier-priced options with clear dollar figures. Anthropic’s posts matter if you sell or host agents: distillation pressure is now a first-class product constraint, and election classifiers will keep getting stricter through November.
Things to watch before next Friday’s roundup: whether Muse Wonder Full ever gets an API price, Reflection’s Beam weights, Chrome/Edge and other security follow-ups from our Ivanti Connect Secure vulnerability and prior weekly coverage, and any change to Argon’s introductory window.
