Claude Max 5x vs 20x: Limits, Price and Who Needs Which
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

TL;DR: Claude Max 5x costs $100 a month and Max 20x costs $200 a month on the web, billed monthly only. The multipliers describe how much you get per five-hour session compared with Claude Pro ($20 a month), not a guaranteed weekly total. Both Max tiers also have a weekly limit, and chat, Cowork and Claude Code all draw from one shared pool. Both tiers include the same features and models, including Anthropic’s Fable models for up to 50% of your weekly limit. Pick 5x if you hit Pro’s limits a few times a week. Pick 20x only if Claude, usually Claude Code, is running for most of your working day.

Last updated: October 14, 2026. Prices and limits checked against Anthropic’s pricing page and Claude Help Center.

Anthropic sells two Max tiers, and the only real difference between them is how much you can use Claude before you hit a wall. That sounds simple until you read the fine print: per-session multipliers, weekly caps, a separate allowance for Fable models and, if you subscribe from your phone, possibly a different price.

We haven’t logged our own usage on either tier, so this isn’t a “we ran out after X prompts” post. It’s a plain-English reading of what Anthropic actually promises, with links to every source, so you can work out which Claude Max tier fits before you pay.

Claude Max 5x vs 20x: what’s the difference?

Usage is the only difference. According to Anthropic’s Max plan help article, Max 5x “includes five times the Pro plan’s per-session usage allowance” and Max 20x includes 20 times. Features, models, Claude Code access and priority access at busy times are the same on both. Since October 7, 2026, the one other difference is the monthly API credit: $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x (more on that below).

Claude Pro Claude Max 5x Claude Max 20x
Web price $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front) $100/month $200/month

Claude Code Included Included Included
Fable 5 / 5.1 Usage credits only Up to 50% of weekly limit Up to 50% of weekly limit
Priority at high-traffic times No Yes Yes
Price per Pro-session of usage $20 $20 $10

The last row is our arithmetic, not Anthropic’s. Max 5x gives you five times Pro’s session allowance for five times the price, so it’s no cheaper per unit. Max 20x gives four times the session allowance of Max 5x for twice the money, which halves the cost per unit. That’s the main argument for 20x, but only if you actually use it.

How do Claude’s weekly limits work?

Every paid plan has two limits: a rolling five-hour session limit and a weekly limit on top. The session allowance is what the 5x and 20x numbers refer to. The weekly limit “applies across all models” and resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, which you can see in Settings > Usage.

That distinction matters. Anthropic’s help article describes the multipliers as per-session, and it doesn’t publish a weekly figure for either tier, in hours or messages. So don’t assume Max 20x gives you four times Max 5x’s weekly total. Anthropic also says it may limit usage “in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion.”

There’s no fixed message count either. The pricing FAQ says what you can do “depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the model you choose, and the features you use.” Long chats, big file uploads, connected tools and high effort settings all burn through the same allowance faster.

Does Claude Code share limits with chat?

Yes. Claude Code, Claude on the web, the desktop app and mobile all draw from one pool. Anthropic’s pricing page says Claude Code “shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan, so your work in the terminal and your chats draw from one pool.” A heavy coding morning leaves less for chat in the afternoon.

To check where you stand inside Claude Code, run /usage. Anthropic’s Claude Code cost docs say subscribers see plan usage bars and a breakdown of what counts against their limits, including skills, subagents, plugins and individual MCP servers. Press d or w to switch between the last 24 hours and the last 7 days. Those figures cover only that machine, so for the full picture across devices, check Settings > Usage on the web.

The same docs point to the biggest drains: long sessions that are never cleared, and using Opus for routine work. Running /clear between tasks and defaulting to Sonnet stretches either tier a long way.

How does Fable fit into Claude Max?

On both Max tiers, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are included for up to 50% of your weekly usage limit. Anthropic’s Fable help article, dated September 2, 2026, says Fable models “draw from your plan’s regular weekly usage limits and use them faster than other Claude models.”

It’s a cap, not a bonus. Anthropic answers the question directly: you don’t get 50% more on top of your weekly limit. After you’ve spent half your week on Fable, you either switch to another model or pay for more Fable with usage credits.

This is a real reason to pick Max over Pro. On Pro, Fable runs only on pay-as-you-go usage credits from the first message. Anthropic’s API pricing lists Fable 5.1 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, five times Sonnet 5.5’s $2 and $10, which gives a sense of how much faster it drains your allowance.

Do Claude Max plans include API credits?

Yes, since October 7, 2026: $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 a month on Max 20x. Anthropic announced the credits alongside Claude Haiku 5.5, and its API credits help page says they cover the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Claude Agent SDK and the playground. They don’t cover Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps, they expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover, and you claim them by linking a Claude Console organization to your plan. Anthropic also halved Sonnet 5.5 cache reads to $0.10 per million tokens on the same day; our Sonnet 5.5 vs GPT-6.1 Sol comparison covers what that does to API costs.

Why does Claude Max cost $125 in the app?

Because app-store pricing differs from web pricing. Anthropic’s help center says its $100 and $200 Max prices “are for web subscriptions only. Mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform.” On Apple’s US App Store listing, Claude Max 5x is $124.99 a month and Max 20x is $249.99, while Pro stays at $20.

That’s roughly 25% more for the same plan. Apple and Google take a commission on in-app purchases, and Anthropic appears to pass it on for Max. The fix is simple: subscribe at claude.ai in a browser.

App-store billing also changes how upgrades work. Anthropic says web upgrades are prorated, while on Google Play you pay the full price of the new plan and unused value becomes extra days. Refunds for App Store subscriptions go through Apple.

UK readers: Apple’s UK App Store listing shows Max 5x at £119.99 and Max 20x at £249.99 a month. Anthropic’s web pricing page lists USD only and shows the local price at checkout; we couldn’t verify an official web GBP price.

Is Max 5x enough for daily Claude Code use?

For most solo developers using Claude Code for part of the day, Max 5x is the sensible starting point. The case for 20x is several hours of agentic coding every day, multiple sessions in parallel, or regular Opus and Fable use on large codebases, all of which consume the shared pool much faster.

A practical way to decide, since Anthropic doesn’t publish weekly numbers:

  1. Start on Max 5x (or Pro, if you’re not hitting limits yet).
  2. Watch Settings > Usage and /usage for two weeks. Note how often you hit the five-hour wall and how close you get to the weekly limit.
  3. Upgrade mid-cycle if you need to. Upgrades take effect right away and Anthropic charges the difference on a prorated basis, so you don’t lose money by starting low.
  4. Consider usage credits for the occasional heavy week. Paid plans can turn them on to keep working at standard API rates instead of jumping a tier.

Downgrades take effect at the end of your billing period, so going from 20x back to 5x is low risk too.

Which Claude Max tier should you pick?

Max 5x is for frequent users; Max 20x is for people whose workday runs through Claude. If you’re comparing Claude with OpenAI’s plans, our GPT-5.5 retirement guide covers what’s changing in ChatGPT’s lineup this month.

  • You hit Pro’s limit a few times a week: Max 5x. Same price per unit, five times the headroom, plus included Fable.
  • You code with Claude Code most of the day: Max 20x is likely worth it. It’s the only tier that’s cheaper per unit than Pro.
  • You hit limits once a month: stay on Pro and buy usage credits when needed.
  • You want annual savings: only Pro has annual billing. Both Max tiers are monthly.
  • You’re a team: look at Team plan premium seats instead, which come with admin controls, usage analytics and pooled monthly API credits of up to $500.

Our verdict: start with Max 5x unless you already know you’re a heavy Claude Code user. The 20x tier is excellent value per unit, but at $200 a month that value only shows up if you use it.

FAQ

What’s the difference between Claude Max 5x and 20x?

Usage and API credits. Max 5x gives five times Claude Pro’s per-session usage for $100 a month plus $100 in monthly API credits, and Max 20x gives 20 times for $200 a month plus $200 in credits. Features and models are the same on both.

How do Claude Max weekly limits work?

Max plans have a five-hour session limit plus a weekly limit across all models. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time assigned to your account, shown in Settings > Usage.

Does Claude Code share limits with chat?

Yes. Claude Code, claude.ai, the desktop app and mobile all draw from the same usage pool on Pro and Max plans.

Why does Claude Max cost more in the app?

Anthropic’s $100 and $200 prices apply to web subscriptions. Apple’s US App Store lists Max 5x at $124.99 and Max 20x at $249.99, so subscribe on the web to pay less.

Is Claude Max worth it over Pro?

It’s worth it if you regularly hit Pro’s limits or want Fable models without usage credits. Max 20x is the only tier that costs less per unit of usage than Pro.

Can I pay for Claude Max annually?

No. Anthropic says Max is available as a monthly subscription only. Annual billing is available on Pro and Team plans.

Sources checked October 14, 2026. Anthropic says prices and plans are subject to change, so we’ll update this post when they do.
